Pink Tulips (just not today)

Standing on your doorstep

On one morning in spring

Delivering Pink tulips

Not half as pretty

As what made my insides ring

Walking along the Grand Canal

At midnight in the pouring rain

Writing lines that came from who knows where

On a love letter bearing your name

Singing:

She’s gonna be my true love

‘Till time fades away

She’s always been my true love

Only just not today

Beneath a tree

Among the tapestries

Along Portobello road

Me and the boys selling corduroys

Standing in the cold

She came by

Said hi

And swiftly disappeared

Throughout the coming year

The truth became clear

It was what I’d almost feared

That you were:

Gonna be my true love

‘Till time fades away

She’s always been my true love

Only just not today

I dreamed up a whole lifetime

About a house along a country lane

Where you and me raised a family

I couldn’t see I was going insane

I was dancing beneath the autumn sky

Mending the roof with a hammer and nails

You were sitting by the fire with the grand children

Reading Russian fairy tales

Singing:

She’s gonna be my true love

‘Till time fades away

She’s always been my true love

Only just not today

We were married in the winter

Just a small affair drawn up on a note

But your fingers were gentle as the falling snow

Brushing confetti from my coat

I sang the night a love song

Which entertained the guests

We drove away at the break of dawn

You had a babe upon your breast

Singing:

She’s gonna be my true love

‘Till time fades away

She’s always been my true love

Only just not today

I know you even tried to warn me

But that only made matters worse

Only one thing you could have informed me

Would have lifted the curse

No matter my true love

One day the dream will fade away

And I’ll be as free as the rolling sea

But still the seasons say

That you’re:

Gonna be my true love

‘Till time fades away

She’s always been my true love

Only just not today
